Spinnerette – Spinnerette

Being a huge Distillers fan, I thought it great that Brody had formed another band, namely Spinnerette. More punk lashed out at 1000MPH please, thank you very much. With the debut album though, Brody doesnt tick any of the boxes that made her so great in The Distillers.
Produced by her husband, Josh Hommes (Queens of the Stone Age/Eagles of Death Metal lead singer), there is definately a lot influence coming from the man himself, but Brody Dale has written all the songs herself. The result is more of an Indie experience with a touch of punk. The album breaks out into a bass driven intro, Ghetto Song, which was also the first song I heard from them. The punk that helped The Distillers rise to fame is all but gone here, and leaves a very raw sound, with the exception of the vocals, which Brody holds together very well. The guitar compliments the bass very well, and its a good start for the change in styles with Brody. So far so good.
All Babies are Wolves give mixed results, the verses are the most standard, sub pop-grunge I’ve heard that it makes me want to skip to the next track. But suddenly the chorus bursts into heavy power-chords and suddenly the song comes alive. Sounds like shes gone back to roots, and I love it. Cupid however is a downturn in the albums quality. Its like we’ve heard it all before, and the song goes through the motions. Its acceptable as a song, both lyrically and melodically, but put together, its samey.
Geeking is definately a surprise on the album. Its quite addictive and enjoyable, as the bass drives happily along, and Brodys approach on the song is quite good. Unfortunately, the album is downhill from here.
I’m not going to review song by song here, if you’ve heard bands of late, they wont stand out. As an album, its below average and distinctly disappointing. As a singles band, they could get some recognition, as the music is more radio friendly than The Distillers, and is far better than most of the rubbish on the radio. The drums are generic, average at best. The basslines are mostly a run-of-the-mill nature, nothing we havent heard before. The guitars are uninventive and repetitive. Thankfully her voice still rules the roost, but I’ll be sticking to my Distillers albums, thank you very much. Sorry Brody.
5/10

I’m sorry but I’m about ready to punch the next person who disses Brody’s new side project for the sole reason that she put out this album was to make it sound nothing like her old stuff- something new, because news flash: the distillers are disbanded- no more. New band, new sound: driving song, baptized by fire, cupid, rebellious palpitations are all amazing songs. Plus the voice is what makes it all come together: that is still all Brody. I’ve always enjoyed seeing bands break out from their typical stuff and try something new, it takes cahones and its exciting to see and hear as a fan. All great musicians are never one-sided.
